This is an exciting opportunity to join our studio as a Lead Tools Programmer, directing a small yet growing Tools team. The Sumo Leamington Tools team is a long-term mission for the Sumo Leamington Spa studio, intended to build and support sustainable tools for the various projects which are being developed by the studio and also tools which can help everyone in the studio.
Since this a is a new role and a new team, this is a great opportunity to shape & influence the engineering and development processes for this team. A significant proportion of the work will be hands-on programming and technical development, so this role presents a great opportunity for programmers who wish to take on new responsibilities in their career whilst remaining very hands-on with development.
As a Lead Programmer, you should strive to get the very best out of your team, learning their strengths and areas for growth, identifying training and learning opportunities, and building strength and depth within the team. This will also involve identifying additional hiring needs & recruiting programmers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of Game Development tools programmers.
  • Design and develop excellent tools for use by a variety of customers and game development disciplines!
  • Build relationships with key members of all the development teams in the studio, and speak regularly to them in order to understand each team’s requirements.
  • Regularly communicate the tools-team roadmap & deliverables to development teams in the studio & to the management team, ensuring a strong feedback loop.
  • Provide updates to studio management on risk areas for the tools team.
  • Provide updates to studio management on resourcing requirements for the tools team.
  • Mentor and support your team, undertake 1-to-1 meetings regularly, goal setting and performance reviews.
  • Identify training needs for individuals and work with the TD and Sumo’s Training Team to provide any such training.
  • Essential Skills & Experience

  • Significant commercial programming experience. Must have used C# in a significant capacity within the last 12 months.
  • Developing tools for Game Development teams using appropriate programming languages and technologies.
  • Experience of Programming languages and technologies which are typically used to develop tools. If you have experience of any of these languages and technologies, we’d love to hear from you.

  • REST API development, and use of REST API design tools such as Swagger, PostMan, etc.
  • Web-tool development, using modern frameworks like React, Angular, etc.
  • JSON, XML, HTML, CSS – data interchange formats and markup languages.
  • Expectation of fluency in at least 2 of the above programming languages/technologies.

  • How are you at..

  • Debugging code on various platforms.
  • Releasing software to customers.
  • Working with various project stakeholders to understand & define clear requirements for the tools that they need or would benefit from.
  • Planning milestones and deliverables for a programming team, breaking down working into smaller tasks, and estimating how long tasks will take.
  • Task tracking system, such as Jira, or something similar.
  • Reviewing code, providing constructive feedback and suggestions for code improvements.
